Heat Pumps: Why Are They Eco-Friendly?

What Are Air Source Heat Pumps?

Air source heat pumps use naturally occurring air from outside to heat your home inside. Heat pumps are standalone appliances with two components, a condenser situated on the outside of your property and an indoor unit, similar in size and appearance to an air conditioner.

The two components are separated by a refrigerant line which compresses cool fluids and transfers the heat to the indoor unit. This is then sent to your radiators or underground heating to keep your home warm.

The remaining heat can also be stored in your hot water cylinder so that you can access water up to 65°C for baths and showers or from other water faucets without having to rely on a traditional gas boiler.

Are They More Eco-Friendly Than A Gas Boiler?

Air source heat pumps are a significantly more sustainable option. Firstly, traditional gas boilers burn fossil fuels, which are not renewable energy sources. Whilst heat pumps require electricity to run, they use renewable heat sources, so they are an energy-efficient way to heat your home and water.

Burning fossil fuels emits carbon dioxide, so air source heat pumps are a more eco-friendly solution than gas boilers because they rely on natural heat sources and can therefore reduce your household carbon emissions.

Why Don’t More Homeowners Switch To Heat Pumps?

According to European Heat Pump Association, 32,000 heat pumps were sold in the UK in 2020 compared to 1.55 billion gas boilers. So, why don’t more homeowners switch to heat pumps? Well, the short answer is that heat pumps are more expensive to purchase.

The average gas boiler can cost from £1,000 to £4,000, whereas heat pumps are likely to cost between £7,000 and £13,000. Whilst neither option will be cheap, however running heat pumps costs less, so you may recoup the costs in the long run by saving money on your energy bills.

Whether you are replacing your boiler through necessity or by choice, Jewel Renewables aim to make renewable energy systems more accessible to homeowners across the UK. Why not get a quote to find out more?

Combining Heat Pumps with Solar Power

Another way to make your home more eco-friendly is by installing solar panels so that your home can run entirely on renewable energy sources. Heat pumps are powered by electricity, and in certain cases, it is possible to power them using solar energy.

Depending on the size of your solar panels, you may be able to produce enough electricity to power your heat pump without using electricity from the grid. Plus, using solar energy can reduce the cost of running your heat pump by almost 40% annually!

By converting to air source heat pumps powered by solar panels, you can reduce how much you rely on the supply of electricity and gas from the grid, which is still predominantly made up of non-renewable energy.

Why Are Heat Pumps Eco-Friendly?

Reduce Carbon Emissions

Heat pumps do not give off harmful emissions. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), heat pumps could reduce the building sector’s CO² emissions by 50% and 5% of the industrial sector’s. This means that heat pumps could save 1.8 billion tonnes of CO² a year!

Energy-Efficient

Air to water heat pumps regularly reach 300% efficiency, over three times more than traditional boilers, meaning that for every unit of electricity used, 3 units of thermal energy are generated. As a result, you will need around 75% less electricity to heat your home.

Refrigerant Fluid

At Jewel Renewables, we offer our customers the LG THERMA V R32 Monobloc, which is equipped with R32 refrigerant. This environmentally sustainable refrigerant fluid boasts a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 675, which is 70% lower than that of R410A’s.

A+++ ErP Energy Labeling

Our heat pumps can also achieve an ErP Energy Labeling of A+++, the highest possible rating. THEMA V R32 Monobloc features the Revolutionary Scroll Compressor, which increases the overall efficiency with improved performance ranging from 10 Hz to 135 Hz.
